Turbulent Tides
Although Toronto City Council has suspended any further consideration of a proposed ban on the sale of shark fin in city restaurants until the fall, Toronto’s waters remain churned up about the stuff. Until conditions improve, urbanites fishing for fin might just swim clear of the controversy altogether, and take a trip to the ’burbs.
Indeed, there’s no shortage of opportunities to indulge in this exotic dish—a staple of Chinese wedding banquets and other cultural festivities—in Mississauga, where Chinese restaurants abound and many are longtime purveyors of the fin.
Herewith, some suggestions of where one might score a steaming bowl of this dubious (and pricey!) dish in our town.
• At Summit Gardens Chinese Cuisine, 3015 Winston Churchill Blvd., shark fin figures prominently on banquet menus, and you can find single servings of the delicacy, which contains just a teaspoon of shark fin, for $18 (chicken shark fin soup), $15 (seafood shark fin soup) and $20 (crab meat shark fin soup).
• At Emerald Chinese Restaurant, 30 Eglinton Ave. W., shark fin soup containing an entire fin, costs $40 per person; shark fin soup with chicken is half that.
• At Tremendous Chinese Restaurant, 3550 Wolfedale Rd., the small serving of shark fin soup, designed for three people, is $38; the large serving, for eight, is $74.
• At Royal Dragon Chinese Restaurant, 888 Dundas St. E., a single serving of shark fin with chicken soup is a bargain at $10, and the large portion, serving two to four, is $55; a single serving of shark fin soup with crab meat is $12 and the large is $65.
• At Chiuchow Man Chinese Restaurant, 1177 Central Parkway W., shark fin soup is $28 per person, and you have to register your order two days in advance.
