Blue Donkey Hoofs it to Celebration Square
The street food revolution—as much ballyhooed as stifled in Canada’s largest city—is alive and well in Mississauga. One need only have attended the recent festival devoted to the phenomenon—Food Truck Eats!—or taken a stroll over to the place that hosted it—Celebration Square—to know of the food-on-wheels appeal in this forward-thinking metropolis.
The Blue Donkey Streatery is Mississauga’s most ass-kicking new food truck, a rolling tribute to the increasingly popular concept that’s currently parked at Celebration Square. Difficult to miss, the blue-and-white, donkey-adorned vehicle is the only permanent vendor licensed to serve in this vibrant new public space.
Operating courtesy of a pair of 100-pound propane tanks, the truck features two refrigerator/freezers, two gyro rotisseries, a grill, a fryer, a flat-top and enough counter space for its quartet of owners to prepare the (mostly) Greek-inspired delicacies they dish up from within.
The Blue Donkey’s menu is decidedly Mediterranean in its provenance, with the great bulk of its offerings hovering in classics territory. The grilled souvlaki on a pita (pork: $5; chicken: $5.50), gyros on a pita (beef: $5; chicken: $5.50; chicken/beef combo: $5.25) and Greek salad ($4.50 and $7.50) are among the favourites. As per the understood food truck code, eats are cheap here: nothing sells for more than $8.
The Blue Donkey’s permanent digs are nestled between the Mississauga Library and the Living Arts Centre. The newly unveiled square will be home to more than 100 free public events, performances and activities a year. But the best reason to hitch your mule to this wagon? The grub.
